A former vaudeville house/movie palace built in the flamboyant Beaux Arts style in 1926, this pride of Joliet was renovated between 1979 and 1981, when the theater reopened as a performing arts center. It specializes in brief touring productions of musicals as well as an occasional extended theatrical production. The eclectic fare has included Bill Cosby, Kenny Rogers and even an ice-skating pageant. Air conditioned and with excellent sight lines, the Rialto hosts some 50 public performances a year and as many private events. The American Theatre Organ Society has named the original (and recently restored) organ one of America's 10 most significant theater organs. It features four keybords and more than 3,000 pipes and percussion instruments.
