Oak Park Festival Theatre performs two dramas each summer--one Shakespeare work and one modern classic--in the sylvan open-air setting of Oak Park's Austin Gardens, but this well-established Equity troupe gives it everything it has got. The beautifully crafted and convincingly cast productions take on a special spontaneity in their outdoor setting. Bring your own lawn chairs or rent them. The area is sprayed for bugs before each performance. In 1998 the theater departs from its usual fare to present an original adaptation by artistic director Dale Calandra: "Don Quixote" will preserve the period even if it breaks precedent. (Indeed, the theater has left Shakespeare before, to present Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus.")
