Students should view the continuously full parking lot at Dunnhill's as the first lesson in Business 101 -- fill a void deliciously and they will come. McHenry County was in dire need of an upscale steakhouse and the folks who bring you Seasons of Long Grove and Wildberry Cafe (Libertyville) came to the rescue with a 1940s style steak and chop house plus a cool, clubby bar featuring jazz, soul guitar and crooners every weekend. The bar turns out traditional and trendy martinis with a seasonal flair - summer offers a mango sunrise martini while a butternut version hits the right spot in colder months (every Wednesday martinis are on sale, too!) Perhaps you prefer a seasonal wine flight with classic starters like Gulf shrimp DeJonge redolent of garlic; jumbo calamari lightly dusted and fried or Atkins-friendly filet skewers. The kitchen sends out plenty of entree salads, hand packed prime burgers and ample sandwiches at lunch (try the spinach Cobb for a twist on a old fave or the signature shaved prime rib sandwich) but the grain-fed steaks, Midwestern beef aged 21 days or more that are seared and a broiled over a live Hickory wood fire, certainly star in p.m hours. For variety, go for the filet trio -- three medallions crowned with your choice of six signature crusts from bleu cheese to peppercorn. Fresh seafood choices include lobster, crab legs and Costa Rican Tilapia Nicoise. Chef/partner Peter Kalantis adds ambitious nightly and seasonal specials in the appetizer, entree and dessert categories, too. Wearing elastic? By all means dive into homemade lava cake or key lime pie. Call about wine dinners, private parties and catering.
