★★★ “They say Rome wasn't built in a day, but its final collapse takes place over one histrionic 24-hour period in Gore Vidal's ‘Romulus,’ which he adapted from Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt's ‘Romulus the Great.’ It's the Ides of March, and if you think Julius Caesar had it bad on that day, meet the last Roman emperor. The tone is tricky, and the performance styles feel a tad mismatched, with some in the cast straining too hard in the small space. But anchored by Kevin Cox's fascinating work in the title role, this ‘Romulus’ provides an intriguing take on a seldom-produced work.” — Kerry Reid
