Did any of America’s colonial settlers actually care about the rights of Native Americans? Roger Williams did. Best known as the founder of Rhode Island and the first advocate of religious liberty, Williams was also an early advocate of Indian land rights. After he was expelled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he hoped to create a new colony where different races and cultures could live together in peace – a vision that ultimately proved to be an illusion.
