In its intimate storefront space (formerly occupied by Folio Theatre Company), Stage Left Theatre has a sturdy reputation for producing venturesome, contemporary drama and building younger audiences. Representative shows include David Rush's Civil War drama "Leander Stillwell," "P.S. Your Cat Is Dead," Tony Kushner's "A Bright Room Called Day," Caryl Churchill's "Mad Forest," "Teechers," the I.R.A. Romeo-and-Juliet drama "Never in My Lifetime," the anti-gambling saga "Boomtown," the Nancy Drew musical parody "The Clue in the Old Birdbath," "Secret of the Old Queen" and the irreverent '70s retrospective "Just a Little Bit Harder (Performing the Passion of Janis Joplin)." The theater is not afraid to tackle progressive topics and political controversy: Recent shows depicted the siege of Sarajevo and the New Deal's Federal Theatre Project. The theater is air conditioned, with good sight lines and acoustics.
