The Wild Hare

3530 N. Clark St.
Chicago, IL 60657
773-327-4273
In early 2007, Wild Hare toasted its 21st anniversary with a renovation that included an interior redesign, state-of-the-art sound and video system, a downstairs digital recording studio and a beefed-up live music format to continue to provide a home for roots and reggae on the North Side. And, in a nod to the "sound system trucks" that would play in the markets of Jamaica, the bar now features a brightly colored truck replica that functions as the DJ booth.

Calling itself the reggae capital of America is no stretch for The Wild Hare. Seven nights a week since its opening, the stage brings in local, national and international acts booked by owner Zeleke Gessesse, who toured as a bass player in Ziggy Marley's Melody Makers. In a given month, such renowned performers as Rita Marley and Tony Reble have come from Jamaica to perform. "There's got to be music," Zeleke says. And there's got to be tropical drinks, rum and Red Stripe, so sidle up to the bar when you're ready to cool off after some serious swaying to the music.

(Trivia: The club's original name was Wild Hare & Singing Armadillo Frog Sanctuary.)
