The 1800 Club

There's live jazz and an upscale menu at The 1800 Club on the edge of downtown Evanston. Indoors the look is European with dark burgundy walls and a parquet floor. Tables are lamp-lit in the evening. Sit at a table or at one of the 20 stools in the bar area that's outfitted with three TVs and a jukebox. Harp, Bass and Dab are on tap. Hot food is served into the wee hours. Specialties include the beef tenderloin medallions, blackened chicken and 1800 Wrap sandwich. Among the desserts: marjolaine, a chocolate-vanilla mousse with walnuts. The menu offers plenty of sandwiches, salads and appetizers. Outdoors on the V-shaped patio, a tall hedge surrounded by a wrought iron-style fence ringed by Italian fairy lights offers privacy. Located just off the Northwestern campus, the crowd gets younger as the hour gets later.
