Szalas Restaurant

With a menu focused on hearty fare like goulash and smoked ribs, this rustic South Side restaurant offers a taste of south Poland cuisine and culture. Traditional Polish treats like pierogies -- which come stuffed with sauerkraut and mushrooms, potato, sweet cheese or fruit -- are also on hand, along with several varieties of Polish beer. The chalet-like decor includes a water-operated mill wheel; but if that doesn't provide enough of an eastern European experience, stop by on a Saturday or Sunday night to see Szala’s house band. The musicians are dressed in traditional regional costumes and happy to stop by your table for a violin- and accordion-based serenade.
