Completely remodeled after a February 2009 fire, Scarlet has reopened. A lively coffee shop vibe in the afternoons (think basic flavored and spiked coffees, not complex espresso creations) will give way to happy hour and late-night crowds. Kick back in a comfy banquette near a 10-foot-tall photo of a 1920s drag queen (blown up from one of few original photos in the bar's collection of photographs depicting Chicago's GLBT scene in the first half of the century), or have a seat on an antique settee in a den off the main space. A cocktail list inspired by the color red ranges from the raspberry-tinged Crimson to the pomegranate-flavored Rouge. On Sundays, stop in for a "liquid brunch" of champagne, with cartoons on TV and pajama-clad servers.
