The new River Park, expanded in 1996, now actually comprises Legion Park (in the North Park community), Ronan Park and the original River Park. A million-dollar program took over and improved a former water pumping facility and combined more than 120 acres of parkland along the North Branch of the Chicago River. Now a there is a wood-chip, tree-lined path along the bank of the river, an open field and other outdoor facilities and activities including a swimming pool with dressing facility, six baseball fields, two combination football-soccer fields, seven tennis courts, seven basketball standards, a volleyball court, two play grounds, two spray pools, two sandboxes, a bicycle path, cross country skiing and ice skating. There also is a large fieldhouse, gymnasium, assembly hall (with stage) and kitchen. Call the park for details on organized activities.
