This Pilsen hangout on the corner of a quiet neighborhood street attracts folks from all walks of life who enjoy good libations and good conversation, says owner Robert Martin. “We’re trying to get people away from zoning out in front of a TV and back to the old fashion art of talking,” he says. (But don’t panic: the spot does have a flat-screen to showcase the Chicago sports teams.) With a six-door glass cooler stocked with more than 50 craft bottled beers, Martin’s offers a full bar and has a kitchen that serves tried-and-true comfort food such as burgers, chops, chicken breasts, steaks and salads, along with daily specials such as meatloaf. You can expect to hear contemporary rock music in the background, but the retro telephone booth is a throwback to the bar’s storied history as a neighborhood fixture since 1951.
