This casual Chinatown spot from Tony Hu, the chef/owner of Lao Sze Chuan, Lao Beijing and Lao Shanghai, serves traditional spicy Hunan food, a first of its kind in Chicago. Chairman Mao makes an appearance on the sign and inside the restaurant, which is decorated with pictures of famous Hunan citizens. Lao Hunan's motto, displayed on its bright yellow awning, is "serving people," and soon, the eatery's servers will deliver your dinner wearing Chinese military uniforms. The menu includes stir-fried beef and lamb and dishes made with duck and frog. The Hunan region isn't located near the ocean, so expect fewer fish dishes and a sizeable selection of pork entrees, including sauteed preserved pork. However, sea selections include prawn dishes and steamed fish.
