Pictures of Mayan ruins decorate the walls of this counter-service restaurant located on the border of Logan Square and Avondale. La Cocina's kitchen provides diners with made-to-order traditional Mexican treats ranging from potato-and cheese-stuffed flautas to flour and corn quesadillas. Tacos can be topped off with an order of guacamole and chips or frijoles charros (pinto bean soup), based on the owner's family recipe. The restaurant also serves Americanized burritos made with beans, lettuce, tomato and chihuahua cheese as well as more traditional Mexican versions seasoned with beans, onions and cilantro. La Cocina lets diners choose which meat they'd like in their meal; selections include steak, chicken and marinated pork. However, there's plenty on hand for vegetarians, too -- seitan chicken, beef and chorizo can be substituted in any menu item.
