This Logan Square spot is known for its authentic Puerto Rican pork, steak, chicken and ham and cheese jibarito sandwiches, served on plantains instead of bread. Open since 1990, the eatery's mustard yellow walls are decorated with Puerto Rican artifacts -- dried sugar cane, photos, maps and more -- and its menu centers on Puerto Rican favorites like its cabrito dish, baby goat served in a wine sauce, and doughy homemade tamales. The restaurant also serves made-to-order shrimp, beef, pork or chicken empanadas and a selection of homemade soup each day, plus sweet fare like its homemade flan and tembleque, essentially a coconut pudding. However, if you're craving a cocktail, you'll have to stop by the liquor store next door first -- La Cocina Boricua is BYOB.
