The youngest kid on the block, Gallery Atlantis, arrived in early spring 1996. 'I wanted to do something where I could work in a space and help other artists,' says owner Natasha Forgione, an actress, painter and poet. 'I originally started out as a gallery, but it was too dry. I don't like the gallery atmosphere. This is more friendly.' The dramatic showroom has paintings by Chicago artists, functional art, jewelry, hand-painted cards, Frida Kahlo switch plates and picture frames. The most popular items, says Forgione, are functional things and 'kitchen stuff,' such as a wall-mounted rack of shish-kebab skewers made by sculptor Julie Bell. Also popular are pearl-and-gold-beaded picture frames, candle holders, and salt and pepper shakers. Most items are less than $50.
