This made-to-order burger chain, which debuted in Arlington, Va., in 1986, now has more than 360 U.S. locations--including this one in Oak Park. You won't find any frozen food or microwaved patties here. In fact, there's no freezer on site and the kitchen is open so you can watch cooks work the grills and fryers. (Additional evidence that your skin-on, peanut oil-fried French fries are fresh: huge bags of potatoes stored near the order counter.) Though the menu highlights hand-formed ground beef burgers with no extra charge for toppings such as grilled mushrooms, green peppers and grilled onions, you also can order up a kosher hot dog or grilled cheese. And here's an amenity you won't find at most fast-food burger joints: Five Guys provides free peanuts to occupy your time while you wait.
