First Saint Paul's Lutheran is in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood just north of downtown. Noted architect Edward Dart designed the curvilinear building to express a “working church” as opposed to a monumental one. There is no ornamentation to divert attention from the simple yet highly symbolic focal points: the pulpit, Communion table and Baptismal font. Behind the altar, the sweeping chancel wall of perforated Chicago common brick serves as an acoustical baffle without disrupting the design.
