This long-established workingman's bar should not be confused with Crobar, the alternative dance club at 1543 N. Kingsbury, famous for its weekly leather night. It happens, though. "We get calls here all the time, people wanting to know what kind of music we play, wanting to know if there's a party," says owner Nancy Carroll. "We think they want to rent our banquet hall." Nancy and husband Patrick became so annoyed by the confusion that in late 1997 they successfully sued the owners of Crobar, seeking financial restitution due to damaged reputation and loss of catering business. They also forced the Near North Side club to change its name (it became "1543"). The main amusements at Crowbar are playing the lottery and watching baseball on the TV above the bar. Lots of union bumper stickers on the cars and trucks parked outside.
