This homey North Center bakery serves folks from the neighborhood a fresh-baked selection of scones and muffins, as well as espresso drinks and fair-trade java from The Coffee and Tea Exchange. There’s also a lineup of made-to-order sandwiches, salads and other baked treats such as homemade granola and mocha-chocolate chip-banana muffins. Blue Sky is more than just a bakery and cafe—it’s a job-training center for at-risk kids staffed almost entirely by program participants. Blue Sky Inn, the non-profit behind the bakery, also provides job training opportunities through a catering operation and sells Blue Sky’s popular baked goods at the Printers Row and Wicker Park farmers markets. The cafe also operates its own organic garden, from which it purveys the herbs and produce for its salads, soups and savory pastries.
