Owned by self-described Francophiles, Al's Deli has been serving up sandwiches to hungry Northwestern students and faculty since 1949. A window display of their large, fresh-baked cookies lures locals in and the goods don't disappoint, especially the icing-covered butter cookies. The cafe is also known for its changing-daily menu of homemade soups, best enjoyed alongside a half sandwich, with favorites including the turkey with aioli on a baguette. The walls are lined with pictures of France and you can buy imported cookies, drinks and jams -- and even pay in Euros.
