After 10 years at Truman College and other locations, the Aguijón Theater Company established its own air-conditioned storefront theater in 1999 on the Northwest Side. The company's mission is to acquaint people with Spanish language plays by producing works by writers from throughout Latin America and Spain (Mario Vargas Llosa, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and others). Artistic director Rosario Vargas is from Colombia, where in the late 1960s she was a founder of an earlier incarnation of Aguijón (Spanish for "bee stinger") which specialized in political fare. The Chicago version of Aguijón generally is a bit more mellow.
