Competently run by artistic director Michael Halberstam since 1993, this theater, dedicated to dramatizing the writer's voice in all its incarnations, is in an appropriate place: the former back room of a Glencoe bookstore. The theater has offered invigorating looks at such literary giants as William Blake, Oscar Wilde, the World War I poet-lovers Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen and Shakespeare. It also produces drama, such as "A Variable Passion," the late Nicholas Pennell's heartfelt tribute to the power of poetry to alter a professor's life. Recent triumphs include "Niedecker," Kristine Thatcher's tribute to a little-known Wisconsin poet; "The Beats," Kate Buckley's sprightly evocation of hipster poetry and protest; and a riveting "Richard II." Intimate and air conditioned.
A second space, located at 325 Tudor Court, opened in September 2003.
