American Theater Company
Chicago's second-oldest theater company was founded in 1985 as American Blues Theatre, featuring down-to-earth dramas about the bedrock reality of blue-collar workers and Midwestern Americans. A characteristic triumph was the theater's adaptation of "On the Waterfront," an effort way superior to the later Broadway revival. Another typical offering was company member Rick Cleveland's "Tom and Jerry," a comedy about two inept hit men. Under artistic director Damon Kiely, the theater has expanded its focus to present voices that speak to the American experience with programming such as Arthur Miller's "A View from the Bridge," " It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," adapted by Joe Landry, and the Chicago premiere of Lisa Loomer's "Living Out," produced in collaboration with Teatro Vista. Good sight lines, seats and air conditioning.
