Constructed in 1869 as a key part of Chicago's water system, this 154-foot limestone-clad tower survived the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. It now houses City Gallery, a showcase for local art operated by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Across the street is the architecturally similar pumping station, now the Chicago Waterworks Visitor Center, which includes a tourist information booth, cafe and souvenir store.
