This bookstore is heaven for pop-culture freaks who loved "Pulp Fiction." Pinned to the walls of Shake, Rattle & Read are copies of comic books and magazines that defined hip in the '60s and '70s: Creem is up there, along with Ramparts, Rave, Playboy and the very first Robert Crumb Comics, from 1964. "I'm one of the few places that still sells used magazines," said owner Ric Addy, who has thousands more in storage. "It's like an overview of the last 50 years of popular culture." Addy also likes "pulp-fiction stuff, especially if it has to do with juvenile delinquents, drug addiction, or detective stuff, like Jim Thompson. The more lurid, the better." The store specializes in searching out rarities for collectors around the country. Not long ago, a man from Canada called looking to add to his trove of Alice Cooper memorabilia. Addy supplied him with a poster, a book and a record. But you can find a Mark Twain classic or this week's Stephen King book here too. "Now that the price of paperbacks in $6.99, $7.99, people wait a month and come here," Addy said. Although the store has been around since 1965, it was known as the Book Box until ten years ago, when Addy, who had years of experience in dealing records, took it over from his sister and changed the name to reflect the fact that he now carried vinyl. He still has bins and bins of records, much of it stuff that never made it to CD. Even record dealers look to Addy for finds. "A guy came in here from the B-Side in Hyde Park, and he came and bought some of my records," he said. "Rare jazz, rare soul."
