Vegas has one, L.A. has two, New York City has three on Bleeker Street alone -- now Chicago has its very own Marc Jacobs boutique (Don't even get us started about the fact that Savannah, GA, got one before we did). After several delays, the store opened to the public Jan. 15. To be technical, it actually houses the Marc by Marc Jacobs line, a less expensive subset of the main brand. The decor is decidedly downscale, starting with myriad cheap finds piled in metal bins near the front of the store; on a recent visit we spotted fingerless gloves, condoms, compacts, leather bracelets and plastic rings all for under $10.
Head past the glass-topped cashier's counter to find racks packed with geometric-print silk tops and signature striped shirt dresses for women. For men, Jacobs' Stinky Rat collection offers soft short-sleeve polos (an affordable $36) featuring a tiny rat logo on the lapel. Argyle sweaters and distinguished wool coats find space near quirkier items such as shiny, skimpy swim trunks reminiscent of '80s runner's shorts. Near the back of the store, find a small selection of art and fashion books and shelves stocked with men's and women's footwear, from peep toes to metal-studded ballet flats. Most shoes fall into the $200 to $400 range, though Jacobs' designer Vans cost $85 and plastic flip flops are a mere $11.
