If you're looking for information on African-American culture, Desiree Sanders' store is a good place to go. She opened it in 1990, originally on State Street downtown. ''My parents were entrepreneurs. I always wanted my own business,'' she says. ''When I opened, some regular stores carried one or two shelves of African-American literature. I thought that was not enough.''
The store features at least one guest reading by an author every month, more during February (Black History Month). Terry McMillan and Colin Powell are two who've come. Sanders credits McMillan's ''Waiting to Exhale'' with triggering a renewed interest in fiction in her store. ''People want to read books that reflect current pop culture,'' she explains.
