You don’t have to be a "rider," as the savvy staff says here, to make use of the fashion-forward winter gear at Burton, one of three flagship stores in the country for the popular Vermont-based snowboarding brand. Though this four-story brownstone storefront boasts four floors of serious gear, there's plenty for the average guy or gal to snatch up in the way of fashionable (and warm) winter gear. You'll find children's gear on the basement level, men's softgoods (that'd be clothing and accessories) on the main level, women's softgoods on the third floor, and on the top floor, hardgoods, which account for your boots, boards and other technical gear for snowboarding. Burton outerwear is not only known for cold-busting technical features, but also for edgy styling, from asymmetrical zippers to funky cuts. You'll also find plenty of T-shirts, long underwear, belts, street shoes and a hip line of luggage and handbags, too. Our favorite item of the fall 2007 opening is hands down The Sleeper: a travel-friendly hooded sweatshirt complete with a light-blocking eye shield, inflatable neck pillow inside the hood, MP3 player hook-up and earplugs in the pocket. This powder-obsessed brand has really thought of everything -- including the 420 kit, a portable caddy to keep your lighter and, er, cigarettes, dry while hitting the slopes. In the warmer months, you'll find surf-friendly threads and supplies.
