"We're a gigantic, stationary pushcart," said owner Daniel Weinberg, who took over for founder Ralph Newman 25 years ago. Newman, 84, started this venture in 1938 after failing as a professional baseball player. He originated the Civil War Round Table movement, which has expanded worldwide; Weinberg is a past president of the Round Table and remains on the executive board. Such authors as Gore Vidal and David Herbert Donald visit for signings and presentations, and Gordon Sullivan, chief of staff of the United States Army, popped in recently for a visit. Weinberg said his is an international audience. "Since we specialize, we get people from all over the country and all over the world through here," he said. "It's everything from people who want a good book to read in our specialty to collectors and scholars."
