Don't go looking for this Chicago handbag studio at the address it's named after. That's a studio apartment where owner Jennifer Velarde lived and the idea for this store was born in 1999. The Armitage shop is an interactive studio where you pick a style of handbag (each is named after a real-life friend or family member of Velarde or her business director) and then mix and match fabrics and finishing details to create a one-of-a-kind creation that best suits you. There's also plenty of already-constructed bags for purchase. Private parties are held in the space on weekday nights, and are a popular pick for bridesmaids. Group appointments for five or more can be scheduled any time the store is open, typically on Thursday evening or weekend afternoons.
