In May 2012, John Bozich, Gereard Freaney and Bill Stavrou purchased the Boston Blackies restaurants in Chicago's West Loop and Deerfield. All three owners have vast restaurant ownership experience, with multiple other concepts around Chicagoland, including the storied Valley Lodge in Glenview and Blackberry’s Restaurant in Tinley Park, which was recently reviewed by “Chicago’s Best.” Although the whole company was purchased, only two Boston Blackies locations are currently open; however, the owners are in the process of expanding the Boston Blackies concept not only in Chicago's Loop area, but also in promising locations in the surrounding suburbs.
While Boston Blackies has been known for their outstanding hamburgers for more than a decade, the new owners have expanded the available selections to include exciting sandwiches, wraps, ribs and salads. In addition, all side options were previously sold separately, but Boston Blackies now includes one of six side choices with every entree. The most popular expanded menu item has been the buffalo chicken wrap, which consists of crispy, white meat chicken tossed in a homemade spicy buffalo sauce, and mixed with crisp romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes and shredded cheddar cheese. This dish is served warm with the choice of a side.
A guest favorite has always been, and will continue to be, the Boston Blackies ribs! A combination of proprietary seasonings creates a sensational dry rub, while the natural juices and homemade BBQ sauce comprise the wet marinade. The blend of the two cooking techniques combines to make a truly remarkable and flavorful rib entree. Staff as well as guests agree--put Boston Blackies ribs against any in the city, and Blackies will remain victorious.
For guests looking for lunch on the lighter side, Boston Blackies offers “large salad” selections, including a variety of fresh, hand-cut vegetables and a choice of 10 dressings (four of which are fat free!). Salads are recommended with toppings of marinated chicken breast; seasoned, chilled shrimp; tender, sliced ribeye; or Tori’s Homemade Tuna Salad.
Boston Blackies burgers are a delicious combination of 100-percent Certified Angus Beef and a house blend of seasoning and spice. The most ordered and enjoyed burger in both the Deerfield and downtown locations is the Boston Blackies burger, a half a pound of 100-percent Angus beef piled high with crisp bacon, and caramelized and seasoned onions.
On the beverage front, Boston Blackies has expanded its beer selection to feature more than 60 beers, including 15 exciting craft and microbrews.
"We have created something original and entertaining for our guests to enjoy. The list has been formatted to include a variety of local and national tastes and brews, which incorporates seasonal changes and takes into consideration food flavor profiles," Ryan Bozich, Boston Blackies beverage director, said. “Our restaurants have seen an exponential increase in demand for innovative and diverse flavors in our selections. In order to accommodate the demand, I have scoured the city for the latest and greatest in craft beer selections.”
Boston Blackies is also partnering with Peace Corner, a local charity designed to provide time and resources to inner city youth. The downtown location has collected more than 400 new and used winter coats for youths, varying in age from infants to teens.
“It’s been inspiring to see the generosity from guests and staff during this holiday season. While monetary donations are always beneficial, providing a tangible resource for children to utilize immediately is a great way to give back. The amount of winter coats collected within the last month has been wonderful!” employee Tori Kavooras said.
