This historic Pilsen building named for Thalia, the Greek muse of comedy and pastoral poetry, was built in 1892 as a space for theater and music productions; it was designated a Chicago landmark in 1989. The Frederick E. Faber- and William F. Pagels- designed building originally included residential and retail, plus a theater patterned after an opera house in Prague. The current owner is renovating the storied building in stages: The street level will debut in February 2009 with the opening of Ristorante Al Teatro; Thalia Hall Theater renovations are slated to begin in the fall of 2009 for a 2011 opening.
