Brunch at Shokolad

It’s worth stopping by this family-owned Ukrainian bakery-cafe just for a slice of the delicious apricot and lemon-laced napoleon torte, but other sweets in the pastry case such as a drunken sour cherry cake (with brandy-soaked cherries) and a chocolate espresso torte make it hard to choose just one dessert. Though the baked goods lineup skews toward Euro treats, there are also more familiar offerings such as muffins, scones and cheesecake. Need something more substantial than pastry? Lunch fare includes borscht, sandwiches and panini (like the roast beef with caramelized onions, horseradish cream and Gruyere cheese), and before 11 a.m. you can choose from breakfast options like crepes (think sweetened farmer’s cheese with blueberry sauce) or a trio of omelets. So what’s a Shokolad? Chef-owner Halyna Fedus tells us it the Ukrainian word for chocolate.
