Horribly Disappointing!!!!

I like to consider myself a cupcake fancier and I've been to every cupcake specialty joint in the city and I must say that Molly's Cupcakes are the bottom of the barrell. I've gone 3-4 times in the hope that I just got the wrong flavor but I've literally tried every single flavor and they're not even decent. Their buttercream just tastes like butter without suger and not sweet creamy butter, the kind of butter that's been sitting open in your fridge collecting the odors of all the other foods in the fridge. The description mentions a DIY bar and an option to choose your own cake and frosting...well, I've been there 3-4 times and never once did I see that offered or "sprinkle bar" of any kind. The staff isn't friendly or helpful in any way and the only compliment I can give is that they have decent hours...too bad I wouldn't want to go no matter what time of day or night it was.

Not a good experience...

Although the design of the place is a cute idea, their product was extremely horrible. I went with a couple of friends and we ordered the cupcakes (they got the more elaborate ones where I stuck with a classic red velvet). I was a little put off by how expensive they were, but I was just so excited to try them. The place was empty, yet there was garbage on almost every table, and the trash cans were near overflowing. After clearing ourselves a spot by the window, I dove into my cupcake. I don't know if I am just used to sweet red velvet cupcakes, but I was only able to finish half of it because of how sour it tasted. The frosting was horribly bitter and the cake was dry and tasteless. I sat their frowning and watched my friends pick at their more elaborate and more expensive cupcakes, which they were able to finish, but weren't satisfied what-so-ever.

I absolutely loved the "Sprinkle Station", great idea! But I will definitely not be returning. They need to seriously fix some things there.

You people have lost your minds.

First time I've been to Molly's, so I decided to look at the reviews AFTER I enjoyed a Ron Bennington and my wife had a Strawberry Shortcake. First of all, let me point out that the people who have said the cupcakes at the supermarket are better have lost their minds. Those are mass produced garbage cakes, Molly's is all homemade and made from scratch.
That having been said, if you love supermarket cupcakes, Molly's is very clearly not for you. These cakes are made to be savored and enjoyed, not thrown down with a juice box by four year olds at a birthday party. The price is steep, but so is the price of quality. If you want a cupcake to eat, go ahead and buy a six pack of sugar bombs from Jewel. If you want to enjoy a treat that will take you a half hour or more to savor and enjoy with some great conversation, go to Molly's.

The cupcakes are Overdone and not in a good way. The actual cake is blah and frosting is not creamy like a traditional cupcake should be. Overall they were beautiful but NOT the best in the city.

Much better than I thought

I visited Molly's Cupcakes today after reading the so-so reviews. Clearly, I must've visited the wrong location because I thought the cupcakes were great! I ordered 4, one of which was the red velvet (which I consumed in less than a minute). It was buttery, perfectly sweet, and delicious. The cream cheese frosting was the perfect compliment. The jury's still out on the other 3 flavors but if they are anything like the one I ate this afternoon, I'll certainly be back to Molly's!

Go treat yourself!

After reading some of the reviews of people complaining about the dry cupcakes, I was a bit apprehensive driving out to Molly's. Nonetheless, we dropped in after having some delish empanadas next door at Lito's Empanadas. We had the red velvet cupcake with the cream cheese frosting (the classic way to have red velvet), and the Ron Bennington, a chocolate cupcake with a peanut butter filling. And to my suprise and delight, these cupcakes were sooooooo moist and yummy! Neither of us could understand how anyone would think these cupcakes are dry! Yes, they are a bit pricey, but how often do you plan on eating cupcakes? If you think of these cupcakes as a once-in-a-while treat, then the $3.75 shouldn't be so bad. Heck, a cup of coffee at Starbucks costs just as much if not more! Overall, go to Molly's Cupcakes to relax and enjoy a delish, moist, treat along with a coffee and good company.

Yummy specialty cupcakes

It is a really cute store but a little pricey. I didn't care much for the regular cupcakes (which are cheaper), but the specialty ones like the strawberry shortcake, key lime cupcake, and tiramisu were VERY good and a tad more expensive than I'd like. My friend is vegan and enjoyed the vegan cupcake they offered.

Less is More

I decided to write this review WHILE eating my cupcakes from Molly's. I ordered a red velvet cupcake (with cream cheese icing) and a "Ron Bennington" (basically choco cupcake, peanut butter filling, dark chocolate ganache and chocolate icing). I'll keep it short...Red Velvet --> The "cake" tastes like red corn bread (how'd that happen?). Icing was clearly fresh cream cheese. Very smooth and creamy, but not very sweet. I do not recommend this cupcake. The "Ron" was much better. I really didn't taste the chocolate in the cake part, but the filling and icing made up for it. I am saddened because this place is really cute and cozy. They have great hours and the staff is very kind. (The woman behind the counter asked how long it would be before I would eat my cupcakes and recommended that I take a refridgerated "Ron" so that it will be ready by the time I was raedy to eat them. HOW THOUGHTFUL!!!! Sadly, I just don't think the cupcakes measure up to the ambiance of the store and kindness of the staff. If you LOVE chocolate, like me, give the Ron a try. Please note this cupcake is just shy of $4.00. A lot to pay for a taste test. Please tell Molly's that less is more..we are in a recession folks!!!

I don't get it?

I wanted to love this place because it's around the corner for me, but the cupcakes are dry - or something, the cake part is just blah. The icing is so disappointing - it's like whipped cream versus the thick rich icing you expect on real cupcake. I've tried going back three times, each time hoping to think differently. But, nope, I'm done. I wish she'd tweak the recipe... the filled cupcakes leave alot to be desired to. There is a little squirt of filling that doesn't really add much (or the price differential between a plain versus filled one!). I hope this place changes the recipes and makes it, but I suspect in a year the doors will close. Anyone who has had real, homemade baked goods will be disappointed with this place. Very unfortunate!

Not the best in Chicago

I do not understand the big deal; sure the store is cute, but the cupcakes are not that great. I tried the chocolate cake with French buttercream frosting, a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and the lemon cupcake. The lemon was the best of the trio, but that said, it was only so-so, I did not like the carrot cake, and the chocolate cupcake was terrible. It's all about the frosting to me and the frostings at Molly's, especially the French buttercream, are awful. I will not be going back.
