Terrible Toast!!!!!!!!!!
By dlf5 from Elgin, August 31, 2009

After having to wait back and forth for over an hour and trying to leave various times, when it came to getting the food it was disgusting. I've never been nauseous after taking one bite of something before. When I asked the server if I could exchange it for something else she was rude and walked away. When she returned she told me I would have to pay for both meals. Once I told her I wouldnt eat anything then, she walked away and I still had to pay for the once bite of food I ate. They seem to think that since they're so well liked, and that people will wait hours to eat their food, they can treat their customers like junk. Needless to say, they lost a few and hopefully they'll learn to treat people better so that they don't lose all their business. I strongly suggest NOT eating here.

Best Breakfast in the City
By smbrown from north shore, June 30, 2009

Toast offers the best food around...we drive in from the suburbs frequently just to have breakfast and walk around the neighborhood. Jill always goes out of her way to make sure we are well taken care of. Sitting with her at the counter is the only seat in the house for us!
Toast + Jill = a great morning

Toast is the Most!
By cbroyles from Lincoln Park, June 28, 2009

I hate reading these recent reviews where they 'Jill-bash' -- as 8+ year customers, my wife Jacky and I have gone there through dating...to marriage...to children...to currently pregnant again, and Jill has seen us through it all becoming a friend as well as touchstone for our weekend brunch or quick weekday breakfast or lunch when we can steal away. She LOVES kids; always makes our daughters and all other children welcome, and the only time she 'snarks' is when yuppies (and uh - yeah, I'm one. I confess.) refuse to drop their attitudes of entitlement when they step in there (no talking on cell phones and not understanding that 'full' party attendance is mandatory being the two big rules). She's a breath of fresh air for us, and we love hearing the staff's stories (they're all great too - esp. Felix) -- and oh yeah: the FOOD -- crabby eggs benedict, oatmeal, bacon, stuffed french toast -- all must-taste draws...and great sandwches and salads for lunch. We have always come to Toast...and we always will...but Toast without Jill would be a sad place, indeed.

Try the eggs benedict
By emmacate from Lincoln Park, June 25, 2009

The eggs benedict and potatoes with onions and garlic are so tasty. My kids like the stuffed french toast. The waiters always say hi with a smile and the manager makes my kids feel like family. I love the baby pics and funny saying posted around make it feels like someone's home. I really prefer to sit at the bar. Ive met a few friends that way.

I have to say that Jill is a draw for me. I actually saw someone come in and try to get in her face. She was calm and explained that they had to wait until their entire party was present to be seated (just like me) and they were personally offended. I just don't get that people keep mentioning it in these reviews like she wants to make you wait longer. in any case, I favor this place and after 7 years of coming here, I still get excited about going here.

The Grinch who ruined breakfast!
By DishyLishy from River North , June 22, 2009

Toast is the home of one of my favorite breakfast dishes in Chicago - The French Toast Orgy! However I find it almost impossible to enjoy because the women who works at Toast Lincoln Park - Jill - (not sure if she is the manager or owner) could be the most miserable excuse for a host/manager I've ever encountered. I cant tell you how many times I have been to this Toast location, but everytime I go, she's always there and she is always awful! She treats the customers like crap, gives dirty looks, is not accomidating and makes you feel rushed in order to turn tables faster.. I can honestly say that her presence makes the food taste bad. Avoid this location at all costs!!!! If she happens to own the Toast in Bucktown as well, avoid it there too!!!!

unpleasant manager/owner
By loves2dine from lincon park, June 21, 2009

My friends and I thought we would try the Toast in lincoln park because we were in the area, although we usually go to the one in bucktown. What a mistake!! The owner/manager Jill, was so incredible rude to us, we all agreed it would be our last trip there. As we were finishing our meals, she told patrons waiting for tables to hover around our table to encourage us to leave. Meanwhile, I still had food on my plate and couldnt have been there for more than 30 minutes. She continually gave my friends and I mean glares. Never in my life, have I paid to eat a meal and was treated so poorly. Its really too bad. I would encourage everyone to go to Toast in bucktown as they are friendly and pleasant there. You wont regret travelling a little further in order to assure you wont be treated as if you were loathed by the owner. I truly hope she realizes she is loosing customer my her snooty, rude and abbrassive personality. A course in kindness would do her well.

NOT friendly

we had a horrible experience here. The hostess was not friendly nor helpful, and refused to apologize for a poor attitude when I asked her for an apology to my family. They were NOT child friendly at all. Unfortunate, because the waiter was fantastic.

Quality Means...
By DRM from In The Sky, October 27, 2008

1) No screaming kids.
2) Consistently good food.
3) A dining experience that justifies the price.
4) Reliable service.
5) Clean.

Toast is all of the above and if you leave the attitude at home, you too can enjoy this homey place. Thanks Jill, it's good to be back.

YUM YUM!!!
By Keith Whelan from Old Town, October 26, 2008

I've lived in Lincoln Park for a year or so and always wondered if the line outside Toast was worth it. Two of my friends from England were in town this weekend and we ventured on over to check it out! Great idea!

After a night of ribs at Twin Anchors and jazz at Green Mill, we needed a good breakfast to revive us! I had the marscapone-stuffed french toast. Get it with milk! It's like dessert. My one friend had the pesto scrambled eggs and the other had the pancakes which came with yogurt and granola on top. TASTY!!! I plan on going back next weekend...

Great food. Solid service. Good coffee. Decent prices. :-)

P.S. The wait is never as long as the host says. Cut at least ten minutes off the time. My friends think they do that to weed out the real foodies from those that would settle for Nookies down the street.
