Tired, greasy, over-priced
By aluckybug6 from ravenswood, October 22, 2009

This is not a cool hole-in-the-wall diner. The decor is tired, the food is swimming in grease and just doesn't taste like much. The potatoes were especially sad, half-cooked on one side, overly crispy on the other, no flavor. Ick. The prices are ridiculous for the food quality: a mediocre breakfast entre + turkey sausage + an oj was over $14.00. There are many better breakfast options in Chicago.

Great at what they do

It's a "greasy spoon". Great for a hangover, out of town guests who want the basics, nothing fancy for breakfast. I have been coming here since I was a kid (for 15 yrs now) and have never been disappointed.

I had breakfast at Mitchell's on New Year's Day 2005. After about an hour or so, the host rudely interrupted our conversation to announce "we need you to leave, we have a time limit on our tables, it's our busiest day of the year." Their table policy isn't posted anywhere except the menu, which is so big it would take an hour to read. Frankly, if I'm paying high prices for a thoroughly ordinary breakfast, I don't expect to be pushed out the door after an hour. Today's experience completely destroyed my good opinion of Mitchell's. I will never return.

C'mon people, this is by far the best breakfast spot for the money that I have found in Chicago. Granted, there are "classier" places out there to eat, but in terms of great breakfast food for a reasonable price, this place has no equal. BTW I have never had an issue with the service. In my opinion, unnoticeable service is good service.

Two words: vegan pancakes.
They make it all worth while. It's one of the few genuine diner experiences a vegan can have in this city.
