FIVE STARS

I have lived in Chicago for 11 years. My first New Years in Chicago was spent at the Heartland Café! I love the food and the gift shop is great. It is the perfect place in the summer to stop by on your bike for a nice meal. FIVE STARS

fun in the summer but nothing great

the location and setting is definitely the best part about this place. the beers are also pretty cheap most days. however, the food is average at best and a little overpriced for what it is. good place for a date in the sumer

what's with the pessimism?

i've lived in rogers park for two years now and it was the first restaurant my brother brought me to. the service may not be the speediest but i was never frustrated. and the workers are so pleasant and happy it doesn't matter. the food is delicious, whether you're a vegetarian or not. every personwho has come with me there has loved it. so stop the hating.

Baaaaad

I ordered my dinner at 5:10. It came to the table at 6:15. Waiter came by once during that waiting time. Was starving, and the food was still lame. It's natural and organic which I like, but severely lacks flavor and enjoyable texture. The waiter said the cornbread was great. I had it and it's the equivalent of something out of a box. Didn't see one niblet in it. Each beer was over $5 (my fault for not checking the price), but you can buy a six pack of it for $7.
This place has a leftist view which was interesting, but I felt that I had it stuck to me by "The Man" when I left. 2 dinners, 3 beers came out to $53 after tip.

It's just OK for most, but better if you like tofu
By paulobis from Budlong Woods, August 6, 2008

The service at the Heartland is slow, but it's been slow for 30 years. The food is OK, but for vegetarians or tofu lovers, it has a lot to offer. The atmosphere is definitely left political and I find it a bit draining, but it works well for some folks.

The service was very slow. I experiednced one of the worst restaurants I have gone to. What happened? We had to add extra salsa and tabasco to the eggs fried in skillet to give it some taste. The Buckwheat pancakes were like rubber crepes. Hard to digest. I really love pancakes but; couldn't even finish half of them. The third entre was a Breakfast burrito had no taste and also needed salsa and most uneaten. Sorry Heartland.

The food is not great, the service can be slow, but when you live in Rogers Park, its the only place to go.

I love the Heartland, especially for brunch and hanging out in the bar. There is a huge variety of foods on the menu- truly something for everyone, and they have great beer list. I've been going for years and it continues to be a favorite, although the prices have been going up. The bathroom needs some work, and on a busy day the service can be slow - don't go there if you're in a hurry to get somewhere else! But if you want to hang out in a fun and relaxed environment, you'll like it.

i was forewarned about the service speed and now i know why: the food was good and the place was really relaxed when i had a couple of brunches here over the summer but, man, these folks are slow. seriously. if you want a long slow brunch go here. if you're trying to make those afternoon plans, go somewhere else.

I really wish I could say I liked this place: I love the atmosphere, the organic foods they offer, the fact that they tell you which is organic and where it comes from (esp. the chicken). But, the food is not very good - its lacking in flavor and my chicken sandwich was so over cooked it was all stringy and tough. I'll try it again for breakfast, but not for dinner, unless I'm going for music and a beer.
