A great spot for a nice lunch...
By Comensal from Oak Park, July 27, 2009

Overall rating:

I really enjoy Atwood Café for lunch -- partly because of the delightful ambience, certainly, but the food has always been quite good and the service friendly & attentive. (Dinner has been more of a mixed bag for me, but today is about lunch!) A roasted yellow pepper & basil soup was attractive & tasty and a nice complement to a pistachio-crusted goat cheese & beet salad. Washed down with a nice pinot noir, it brightened my day considerably. Pricey? A little. Rewarding? You bet!

My first review mysteriously disappeared! Horrible experience. Overcooked sea scallops that were rubber. I have have better steaks at TGI Fridays. Dessert and service were excellent though. Never again!!

Shame On Me!
By mel5368 from chicago, May 26, 2009

Even though deep down I knew better I had dinner here the other night. Worst food I have had in a long, long time! Sea scallops were terrible, over cooked and rubber. Bizarre seating. Not at all nice for a romantic dinner out. Service was excellent, however that's not enough to return. To be honest I would of been better off going to the theatre and eating popcorn and junior mints before the show.

Chef's night off?
By Patrick from Oak Park, January 20, 2009

Overall rating:

Maybe Monday night is the chef's night off at Atwood Cafe. Whatever the cause, our meal tonight was not up to our expectations based on past visits. As always, it's a lovely room and the staff is warm, attentive and well-trained -- a nice place to dine. The food was not all fabulous, though. Pistachio-crusted goat cheese & beet salad was a favorite, and a black bean soup was smooth and flavorful. Rabbit was tasty but a bit chewy; the accompanying red cabbage sautee was yummy, but the spaetzle was a bit too gargantuan (though it had a nice homey flavor). A duck confit appetizer featured dueling flavors of cherry and (asiago?) cheese; the cheese was a bit too prominent for me. A side of garlicky greens garlic looked promising and had a therapeutic dose of garlic, but was waaaayy too salty (I do not know why cooks salt the bejesus out of spinach and chard -- it's a travesty). For dessert, brown sugar cheese cake was pleasantly paired with a decent butterscotch sauce. We were delighted when our congenial server pointed out that they've introduced a new Monday night promo: half price bottles of wine. Hooray! All in all, a nice visit, but taken down a notch or two by food that didn't live up to past experiences.

Great date night
By Teacher from UK Village, May 16, 2008

My husband and I went to Atwood Cafe last weekend and had a lovely meal and sat in a cute booth by the windows. Our server was also a teacher (like myself) and was very nice and attentive. She gave us some great recs on the menu and wine list. GET THE BREAD PUDDING--we are going back just for that!!!

Great Place to Eat Before a Show

My husband and I stopped here before a show and we have been hooked ever since! Try the filet...it's fantastic! The location is great and the architecture of the building is fascinating. This is a great place to eat for a date night or a night on the town.

Rubber Pork Chops
By Reggie Reviewer from City, March 27, 2008

Overall rating:
2

Food was lousy, pork chops were like eating shoe leather, duck was over cooked and dry. Waiter was indifferent and generally unhelpful. Question: "how is the pasta?" Waiter: "it's pasta" Big help. This place used to have great food and service, now it is awful. The space is beautiful, so go for a drink just skip the meal.

Chicken Pot Pie
By egermata from South Loop, November 21, 2007

Overall rating:
2

I went here today (Weds) for lunch with 2 friends. I've walked by a lot times and thought it looked very nice inside. Then I recently read about their chicken pot pie in Where magazine and decided to finally check it out. The space is very small, and we really didn't like the table we were at (it was one of the ones that had a low couch/bench on on side and the chair on the other). My friends on the couch said they felt like they were kids finally allowed at the adult table because the table was so high in comparison to the low bench (which wasn't comfortable at all). The chicken pot pie had absolutely no flavor (the frozen ones form Jewel are 10x better!). My friend's burger was very good though (it's kind of hard to botch a burger). Service was horrible. The manager (I'm assuming) was doing a lot of work for us (at the end running the card too). Our server barely spoke to us and took forever to bring a refill (or not even bring it either). I know I won't be back.
