Worst Thai food in the city
By MmkCms from Lakeview, January 23, 2009

I cannot imagine a worse restaurant. The waitress acted like she didn't care if we were there. We ordered basic Thai dishes that we have had many times at other restaurants (red curry and lad nar) and they were close to inedible. My lad nar was disgusting - the sauce was gelatinous, more like jello than food. The noodles which should have been crispy and fried were soggy and dirty looking. I had 2 bites. Most servers would ask why you didn't touch your food, but ours acted like it was normal...maybe it is there! STAY AWAY! (thaied to a chair...brilliant and spot on!)

Awful!

I'd have to be thaied to a chair to ever eat this food again. We ordered on a Thursday night..after waiting an hour and a half to get food from the place which was 3 blocks from our house, we literally had to throw it all away and make popcorn. The portions were dismal...even if we had been able to eat it, we would barely have enough for a decent dinner. When we order Thai, we expect a decent portion at least. So after waiting that long, we were delivered the nastiest food I've ever seen. My "steamed chicken and broccoli" was seeping with grease. My fiance's basic sweet and sour chicken had a layer of icky grease on top and was tasteless, except for the vat of fat. The sour part they got down pat! I will never, EVER order from this restaurant again. The only sweet part was throwing it out and getting it out of our sight.

Don't order wrong
By R from Chicago from Lincoln Park, January 22, 2008

We had been loyal customers of this establishment for 4 years. We order 5-7 times per month. Today the food that was delivered was inedible - which is surprising as it is usually very good. When we called to let them know that we could not eat the food, the owner got on the line and yelled at us that we ordered wrong and then hung up on us. Apparently they have too many customers and are trying to thin the ranks..... although the frequently empty dining room does not support this conclusion. If you go, enjoy the food, just don't order wrong.

Disappointed

Based on the other reviews, I'm guessing (and hoping) I just came on an off night. There was one waitress serving the entire restaurant which made service very slow, to say the least. And this was on a busy Saturday night on which all tables were full. We were seated in a very cramped section of the restaurant, where we were literally touching the people at the table next to us - the way the table was set up, there was barely any space between my body and the table, and since we were shoved up against a wall, we couldn't move at all or move the table to be more comfortable. Then the food - I ordered a dish with tofu and was told that they were out of tofu - I thought the waitress was kidding, as tofu is a staple in many Thai dishes. She wasn't. So, I couldn't even get the dish I wanted. Then we tried to order the cucumber salad and were told that they were out of that too. Overall, it was a pretty dismal experience.

We went to Sweet Tamarind on a Friday night. It was so nice in there, the wait staff were really nice. The decor of the restaurant takes you back to the Thai Atmosphere as if you are in Thailand itself. We tried Beef Paradise and Steamed Mussels as our appetizer, and for the entree we had Salmon and Tamarind Noodles and Walnut and Raisin Fried Rice. All the appetizer and entree were so good and tasty. Now every time I think of Thai food i go there. They have opened a new restaurant at Taylor Street called
"Lemongrass" Thai Cuisine(1520 W Taylor St.)I am planning to go there soon. So next time i visit the new place i will write review on how the place and food is there.

I've only eaten in at Sweet Tamarind once, but I've ordered out several times and I'va always been pleased. The menu strays a little bit from the standard Thai list, and when I'm tired of Joy's, this place is always a nice change of pace. Don't miss the tamarind noodles or tamarind shrimp rolls. If you have the time, the food is even better when you eat in.

This was a great restaurant, but we were struck by the fact that, depite being the only party in the outside dining area, we could not smoke. Actually, we were the only people in the restaurant on a Saturday night. Our choices: the spicy catfish curry, which was crispy, fresh, and delicious. The chicken on the green was accompanied by an incredible peanut sauce. The phat thai, while not exactly the traditional "pad thai," was a bit sweet yet sour. Great decor, good service, good value.

The best Thai food I've had in the city. The wait staff is polite and helpful, too. One thing did strike me as peculiar: the first time we went on a Saturday night, the room was so full we had to wait a very looong time to be seated; the second time was also on a Saturday night, and we were the only people in the whole restaurant. Go figure.

Excellent and flavorful Thai food, friendly service and the price is right. The Tamarind Rolls and Satay were excellent, as were the Pad Thai and Red Curry. When they say that a menu item is spicy, you better believe it. Even for someone raised on fiery Indian food, this restaurant had me sweating - but it was worth it. The fried banana dessert was delicious. Its a BYOB - so don't forget to bring your own.
