Bad Food, Bad Ambiance

My wife and I had dinner there on a Saturday. Restaurant decor was pedestrian. The walls were made of cheap plywood and I did not notice anything that made me think "Thailand". The blaring music was modern -- I expected some ethnic music to set the atmosphere at least to compensate for the disappointing environment.

The Panang Curry with beef was watery. It looked like they just ladled some Panang curry in a bowl and dropped a few slices of beef in it. It was totally different from the Panang curry I had in another Thai restaurant where the meat was infused through and through with the Panang curry. In the Silver Spoon version, the sauce did not even seem to want to stick to the beef! The rice that came with it was not freshly-cooked. I've cooked a lot of rice myself and I can tell that the rice they served was probably cooked the previous night and re-served.

My wife's Pad Thai chicken was dry. There was barely any sauce in it and the chicken was also dry.

The laughable thing is that my wife ordered some Cappuccino Cheese Cake and it was cold on the inside but hot on the outside! They probably took it out from the freezer, cut a slice and microwaved it!!! If there was anything my wife and I got from the restaurant, it was the hilarity of the dessert! That at least made our day but it darned cost us $33!

The service staff was hovering in the background talking amongst themselves which I think made me self-conscious. It was not a very relaxing atmosphere.

I'm a fan of the cheap eats and tons of options. The BYOB is great, bring a bottle of liquor and mix it with the fresh juices, like fresh coconut served in the coconut!

Silver Spoon is the perfect place for a quick and delicious lunch. The food is always fresh and delicious. The service is fast and courteous. And you cannot beat the price of the lunch special. Highly recommended!

Let's be honest...

You won't to go to this place for anything other than really good Thai food. It's literally a hole (downstairs, virtually in a basement). I lived in Southeast Asia for two years and I feel I know authentic Thai, Cambodian, and Viet food when I have it. Everything about the flavors and aroma reminded me of my time there. If you like curry, the Panang Curry is the best I've had outside of Asia. If you're feeling a little adventurous, the papaya salad is amazing. I let two of my friends who are quite the picky eaters try it and they loved it. I also love the pepper steak. I've tried the Garlic and Pepper Steak and was a little disappointed, and that's the only reason I won't give it 5 stars. If I could it would be more of a 4.5, not 4

You'd better bring your A game! And this place does bring some awfully good game (or food at least) to the table.

Very fresh and quick service, reasonably priced as well. I've enjoyed my meals here. Makes sense that this is the same people as Spoon Thai up on Lincoln, awfully good stuff there too.

My husband and I have lived around the corner from this place for years and have never checked it out because we are always weary of Thai+Sushi restaurants. Now they have separated the two and the sushi resturant (upstairs & outdoor seating) is called Friends. We ate inside (cute atmosphere) and were amazed at the huge selection! Everything we ordered was outstanding and the service was very attentive. Highly recommend the salsa roll also! We thought it was still BYOB, so had a $15 corkage fee. Next time we'll order a bottle off the menu (ave. cost about $22-24). Had to write to tell people to check this place out .... it's a little hidden gem next to Rosebud!

Fantastic food in a no-frills atmosphere. Service is spotty but sincere. The prices are a great value, even more so considering the location. They've recently divided the restaurant - upstairs for sushi, downstairs for Thai. Both are excellent.

I always have dinner at Silver Spoon. Lately, they changed lots of things such as new menu, new atmosphere and everything looks much better. I used to BYOB and paid for 2 dollars corkage. Now, they charge corkage fee 5 dollars/person. I was little upset but after i talked to a server, i understood why they had to do this. It's just their policy and they also serve their own beers and wines. Sushi and rolls are awesome. My friends always order Thai food and the taste is really good. The service is like family style, not too complicated. There are a few servers but they try to do their best. The food price is so reasonable. I do love this place!

I was hopeful about this place because I was looking for a good option to eat somewhere near Michigan Avenue. Unfortunately, the Thai dishes were average at best and the service was awful - we waited at least 10 minutes just to get water, and that was after we asked three different servers! I will not return.
