I'll never be back

Went with a large party (9 people) on Saturday night. The wait staff and overall service was TERRIBLE. Incredibly rude and extremely unhelpful. Felt rushed the entire time we were eating. Steak was just OK - there is much better in the city. The wait staff alone runied the entire experience. Therefore, this place does not deserve my business. I'll never be back and I will tell everyone not to go.

Unbelievably Bad!

Went 6pm on a Monday, so the place was not busy. We ordered the Lomo Relleno (big meat roll thing to share) based on the server's rec and we waited for more than 30 mins for it. The meat was HORRIBLE! We ordered medium rare, and the center was completely raw. I actually prefer my steak with a pink center, but this was inedible. The outer portion of the meat was tough and grissly. We could hardly cut it with the steak knives. The sauce was greasy. The server offered to take it back (and do what with it, I'm not sure) but since it took so long, we had no time for that. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Never, never again.

What's the deal here. It's crowded and not very good and no value. But it's always busy. There are so many better places for beef in Chicago.

extremely disappointing

We went to celebrate my friend's birthday on a Sunday evening, and had a disastrous and expensive experience. The waitstaff was inattentive and got many orders wrong. We had to send back two dishes for being il-prepared. The very dark, very loud, VERY tight quarters did not lend itself well to a celebration. The food was mediocre at best, not very flavorful, and not cooked to specifications. We would not absolutely not recommend it.

Table of 7 is Lost in Translation?
By MYG from Lincoln Park, March 22, 2009

Stopped by Tango Sur last night, with a party of 7 @ 7. When we asked how long it would be for a table of 7, the host very matter-of-factly said, "we don't do 7." I understand Tango Sur is a small, but poplular place - undoubtedly because of the BYOB policy - but at least give us the courtesy of a professional answer. During an economic time where most restaurants are begging for your business, Tango Sur only wants it, if you keep your groups to parties of 4 or less, wait outside for ridiculous amounts of time, and once seated - ensure you are nearly sitting in the laps of the people at the table next to you. Sounds like a great deal, huh? Skip Tango Sur and try Las Tablas on Lincoln where a table of 7 or more, is no problem. Las Tablas is a S. American Steakhouse with excellent food, friendly and efficient service, spacious tables, and with no reservation (on a night they were booked), we waited only 40 mins.

The best value in Chicago
By LeleW from River North, February 16, 2009

Three of us went to Tango Sur for an early dinner Sat. night. We got there at 5:20 and the place was already packed -- every table in all three rooms was filled. We were the first group to be sent to the waiting area, though, so we had to wait only about 15 minutes to be seated. (As our meal progressed, we saw the line grow exponentially.)

If you're a carnivore, this is the place for you. Our table had the churrasco, the ribeye and the filet; the filet was mine. At $24 or so, I thought that was a pretty typical pricetag -- until my plate arrived with *two* filets, perfectly flavored & cooked, and accompanied by very yummy spinach mashed potatoes. It was three meals' worth of meat. My friends said the same about their meals. Add to that the fact that they don't even charge a corkage fee, and you've got a great deal.

Next time, though, we're going to make it a late lunch/early dinner so we can try to avoid the dinner crowd.

Belly Busting

One of my favorite spots in Chicago!

Best Bang for your buck. Empenadas are fantastic and the chimichurri sauce will haunt your dreams (in a good way). The filet and spinach mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned and cooked and super affordable!

Ambience is very romantic and BYOB is always a plus. Very intimate!

But the food....oh the food...it's got to be all about the FOOD!!!!!

Overall: A. Long wait is the only downfall...but then again that must mean they're doing something right!

It's small, it's crowded, it's loud but it's BYOB and some of the best beef I've ever had. Don't let the negative reviews dissuade you. It's worth it.

Thought it would be better...

Two people recommended Tango to me, so we went for a romantic dinner for two on a Saturday night. The wait for 2 was over 1.5 hours, and the rude staff treated our party as non-existant. If you're not a big enough group to get a reservation, consider another restaurant. We started talking to another group of 3 in the "waiting room" in the back of the restaurant to see if they wanted to join parties so maybe we could get one of the HUGE OPEN tables if we claimed to be a larger group. When we did get seated, the linens were soaking wet (nice and comfy on a freezing cold night!), and we had 2 servers coming to our table b/c they couldn't figure themselves out. It was very dark, so we couldn't see what we were eating, but the romantic candle light and close proximity to other diners was cozy. The food was average (we had a table-top grill special) and probably not worth the 1.5+ hour wait. The BYOB makes the bill much more manageable, and coming here with a big group or on a weeknight would be a better option.
