Colombian-born Carlos Escalante and his wife, Eve, were wowing friends and coworkers with homemade versions of the South American version of a Hot Pocket, the empanada, until one day it hit them: “Wouldn't it be funny if we started charging for them?” recalls Eve. The result is this tiny, mostly carryout spot on a busy stretch of Clark Street in Lincoln Park. The slightly sweet crust (fried in heart-smart canola ) comes stuffed with your choice of beef, chicken, spinach, slow-braised barbecue pork, beef-and-rice, among others options. There's even a chocolate-banana version for dessert.
