The atmosphere at El Nandu, an Argentinian restaurant in Logan Square, is as sprightly and carefree as the ostrich-like bird it is named for. The dining room has a light, modern look, with a large bar and raw brick walls. Every evening slides of South American scenes are projected on a screen above the stage. Each Friday and Saturday night, El Nandu sizzles as musicians perform tango, bolero and flamenco on the restaurant's small stage. El Nandu's empanadas, small balls of light dough filled with fresh ingredients, earn raves from regulars. Eight varieties include the criolla, stuffed with ground beef, red peppers, onions, olives, raisins and egg; the tucumanas, filled with steak; and the camarones, packed with fresh shrimp and cheese. El Nandu takes its meat seriously, especially the churrasco (grilled NY strip steak), which comes with toppings like grilled onions or cheese.

This place is definitely worth trying. The steaks are huge and the chimichurri is excellent. The Malbec is good too!
