Another Amazing Experience

Tramonto's is like no other place in the Chicago area. I think my wife said it best when she said it almost has a Vegas feel. Yes it's a steak house &there are many in the Chicago area, but none are quite like this. The service is impeccable, the food is fantastic, & the ambiance is truly unique with the visible wine "cellar", the high ceilings, water fall, etc. We have been to Tramonto's 4 times now, & they literally welcome us back. We wanted to get a bottle of wine that we had 2 visits ago; the waiter pulled out a list of the wines from each of our meals. Felt like a VIP. Last time we were there it was for my wife's birthday, every member of their staff wished her a happy birthday, the sommelier brought sparkling wine to celebrate, they decorated her dessert plate (w/o me asking), etc. Everyone was wonderful. If you're looking for a truly unique experience to be taken away from your typically Chicago steak house (despite it being in Wheeling), Tramonto's is definitely worth it.

we used to like this place but had a bad experience with service last year and did not want to return till 3 weeks ago. our whole family with 2 bigger kids had a good time, and will definitely be back again.
service was good, attentive from the whole house, not just our server
there was a fruit fly around our table and finally got into our wine, they replaced it, i was hoping that she would comp it
food was good, as usual
it's not cheap but worth it
will be back

Funny, Mr. Pop I too experienced a long dining experience (2 1/2 hours) and felt the staff there was completely ambivalent. That being said, for those prices....slightly above average fair.

Forget about it!

This was our first (and possibly last) tiime there. It was my wife's birthday and I prearranged it when making reservations. The place is initially beautiful. Then you look at the fact that there is an exposed fire door and it ruins the whole ambiance. Our table was the last one in the corner right where the food is prepared. As such, we had to encounter all the comments from the person whose job it is to match the food with the waiter's order. Hhe was constantly shouting at the cooks.....WHERE'S MY SPINACH FOR #40!, and some frankly unpleasant comments also. All of which we heard. Then because of our location, every waiter and bus boy had to walk past us creating not only a commotion but a cool breeze. Anyway, we endured and ordered. Our shrimp cocktail took 20 minutes to arrive! My fish was wet. We had to beg for more coffee. Our waiter was oblivious to the fact that we had preordered a birthday dessert and kept asking us what we wanted for dessert. I told the front desk person about it and he finally told the waiter who brought the cake. Lastly, we waited over 20 minutes and never got a check. Our dirty plates from dessert were never removed during all this time. I finally suggested to my wife that we just put on our coats and leave, maybe that would get the check to be delivered, but no luck! I went to see the manager and she told us that because of all the problems, dinner would be compted and that she wanted us back. I have a hard time believing all of this was normal for this beautiful restaurant and would like to give them another chance, as there is much room for improvement.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME IN THIS PLACE!

The restaurant is very nice and high end however, the service and food DO NOT live up to the atmosphere. As soon as we were seated and they brought out the basket of bread, fruit flies began to whiz around the table and we asked to be reseated which thy did in a not so cozy area of the restaurant and once again, when the fresh basket of bread arrived, so did the fruit flies. Needless to say, the bread wasn't eaten. As well as having to swat off flies, my drink arrived incorrectly and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced. My boyfriend ordered a Johnny Walker blue label on the rocks and he ordered me a hyponotiq martini. When I got the martini I thought it tasted funny but I figured the bartender just didn't know how to make one correctly. Come to find out they put Johnny Walker in the martini and charged us $45 for it! That was more than my steak! Which leads me to how unsatisfying that was. I ordered an 8oz Filet and I like my steak well done. When it came it was pinker than my boyfriend's who ordered his medium well. I didn't even finish half of it and we were done. All I wanted to do was get the check and get out of there but the waitress kept trying to push dessert on us which I declined 4 or 5 times. My boyfriend didn't let me see the total but I did get to see a portion of the bill when we were trying to figure out why we had two Johnny Walker drinks (he only ordered 1) for $47 (His) and $45 (mine) and I'm sure after tip the bill was over $300 and SOOOOOOO NOT WORTH IT!!!! PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE, GO TO STONEY RIVER IF YOU WANT A GOOD STEAK, IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!

Always a positive experience

I have been to Tramonto's 4 or 5 times and except for venturing into the seafood side of the menu once, my experience there has always been very positive. I have been there on a busy weekend night and also during the week when the restaurant is not as crowded. The service has always been excellent from the hostess to the bus staff. The food has been prepared just as ordered and presented beautifuly. I have dined at most of the steak houses in Chicago and find Tramonto's on par if not above the quality in the cities top rated places. I will be back as I always feel welcomed when I come there.

Average or less unacceptable in Chicago's Steakhouse market
By mbgrant from Edison Park, July 8, 2008

I was hoping for a great experience, but had only a mediocre one; unacceptable for Chicago. We ordered the Sunday Dinner for Two for variety, & his experience was better than mine. First, half of the escargot were overcooked (burned, nice & rubbery), then my salad (dressing choices didn't even include a house?!) was wilted & brown in spots. The filet arrived, though it was not anywhere near medium - Half was well done and the other half, which was so overseasoned it dulled my tongue, was almost rare. The dessert was VERY NICE: light cheesecake! Service was poor - There was a miscue on ordering our desserts, & admitting it may have been the fault of a smart comment I made, the waiter agreed with me instead of graciously sharing the blame.

The room didn't seem to make sense -- The ambiance lighting was overpowered by the full-height (two-storey) gap in the window covering that exposed the fire door. And we were seated, though the room was nearly empty, right next to the servers' station. Not to mention, half of the folks there had on dresses and jackets and the other half had on shorts and t-shirts (we were in the middle of that).

Swing a dead cat in Chicago and you'll find at least an equivalent steakhouse; swing a live one and you'll find a much better experience (Saloon, Gibson's Rosemont, Joe's Prime).

Rather go to Pete Miller's

Tried Escargot for the first time, that was memorable. We had the spinach and caesar salad. While the caesar salad was nothing special, the spinach salad was inedible. Perhaps a bacon vinaigrette is not such a good idea? Our bone in rib eyes were decent, but way too much fat and veins. Next time I think we'll try the seafood. Also, when we first walked in were were told that our table is not ready and we'll have to wait about 15 minutes. When we showed that we were disappointed, a table turned up somehow. Overall, I thought I would be more impressed with the food, seems the furniture and decor was more important at this restaurant.

it was a mistake

we have been here 3 times. the fisrt time was good. the second time was ok, something unpleasant happened and we had not been back for a while. but we came back again today, it was A MISTAKE to have accepted a table at the bar when we called to make our reservation. the bartender was our server, he was busy making his drinks behind the bar and try to serve us too. we had always enjoyed the top notch service from the previous visits, it's not happening when we have a bartender whose primary focus was making drinks. a lady manager of some sort was very professional and helpful, without her we would have left that place "very annoyed". it wasn't anyone's fault, but if you want to enjoy the food, service and ambience, Do Not SIT AT THE BAR. and as for us, we won't be back for a good while, we are going to ruth chris.

Very Disappointed...
By ChicagoBestReviews from NW Suburbs, February 12, 2008

Recently, my wife and I had dinner at Tramonto’s Steak & Seafood. Unfortunately our experience was bad, actually …very bad. We were both extremely disappointed with the meal and the service. My wife ordered a filet mignon and I had the sirloin. Her steak arrived burned and uneatable and mine arrived cold (despite the fact that it was served in a skillet). They reheated mine in short order but my wife had to wait about 10 minutes for them to cook another steak for her. My steak was very tough. When my wife’s steak finally arrived it was tender and flavorful, however when we go out for dinner the idea is to eat our meals together, not one at a time. We had the goat cheese potatoes and the Caesar salad. Both were good, however when we ask for more dressing the waiter forgot to bring it until after we had finished eating our salads. Which leads me to the service. It seems like the level of service has dropped significantly since our previous visits. We found our waiter to be quite unprofessional and quite patronizing. Instead of really being interested in our needs his attitude seemed very scripted. The waiter at the next table was not much better, in fact, while describing the menu choices to the customers he started using profanity, which both my wife and I found unnecessary and extremely unprofessional. None of the wait staff even offered any apologies for our meal. In fact the waiter seemed quite annoyed that he had to return them to the kitchen. He even at one point apparently echoed the sentiments of the chef arguing that my wife did not know what she was talking about, despite the fact that she has had this exact same dish each time she has dined at this restaurant. We found this to be quite offensive. As sometimes happens with new restaurants, the management goes out of it’s way when it first opens so that it gets a good review, then seems to be satisfied with just treading water and getting through the work day. How disappointing.
