crab legs, in the mail?!
By cynthiaw from old town, August 6, 2009

grew up in chicago and went to shaw's a few times every summer. now i've reloacted and haven't had time to get back to shaw's for a few years. i was wasting my time on websites and stumbled upon shawscrabhouse.com where i discovered you can get their king crab legs shipped to your house! i immediately ordered some and they arrived the next afternoon (the box was huge, it was kind of nuts). i steamed them and invited 4 friends over to a very classy dinner . THEY WERE AMAZING. makes missing summer in chicago a little bit more bearable.

Tops in Chicago for fresh seafood
By Hexter7 from Chicago, July 26, 2009

July 25, 2009 My wife and I dined at Shaw’s Crab House last night, and it was fantastic. We have eaten out at a lot of restaurants, and we can honestly say that Shaw’s (both Chicago or Schaumburg) still has it going on, and is top of our list for consistent, quality seafood and shellfish. The food is always prepared right, with great service, and the dining room is comfortable, where you can relax and enjoy your meal. Here was our dinner/all worthy selections: Start with their hand-shucked dozen assortment of oysters (Chicago Magazine just voted “the best” oysters), then their famous jumbo lump crabmeat crabcake (North Shore magazine voted “best crabcake”), then their wonderful Lobster Bisque soup, then split an order of their steamed Alaskan King Crab legs with side of melted butter, then try the in-season special, three delicious soft shell crabs sautéed in lemon, garlic butter, all with great veggie sides, and end it all with Key Lime Pie and Homers Peppermint Ice Cream with Hot Fudge sauce. Hot Intelligentsia coffee drinks and specialty tea capped it all off, and we were very happy overall. Shaw’s has the seafood dining experience down to a perfect science. Great dining experience!

Happy hour M-F 4-6 get half price oysters. Perhaps the best in town. Drinks are a bit pricey but you get the atmosphere to go with it.

Had an Amazing Dinner
By NorthShoreWineGuy from North Shore, March 13, 2009

Two for dinner. Started with Oyster Sampler. Perfect app for two people. Excellent flavors. Ordered the Crab Leg Family-Style special. First course of soup: I had the Lobster Bisque, and it was great. Friend had Clam Chowder, and loved it. Crab presented three ways: Snow Crab, Crab Cakes, and Alaskan King. King definate favorite. Crab cakes very filling, but lacked some flavor (more spice and acid preferred). Snow good too. Three sides included. Coleslaw was the favorite, followed by creamed spinach, and cheesy potatoes last. Dessert was Key Lime pie, heavy on the lime. Pricey, but worth it. Overall loved the experience. Great restaurant!

The Pros and Cons

I made birthday reservations for 8pm and i wasnt seated until 8:30, 2 budwiesers were 10$, which was fine but i wasnt at a club. Our table was very very close to the others and had no privacy....a wierd man kept staring at me from another table but once we got our food it was great! My boyfreind got a free slice of yummy rich chocolate cake and the waiter, Francisco, made us feel really comfortable! It wasnt what i planned but it was definately an experience!

Wonderful New Sunday Brunch
By jgam from west loop, November 9, 2008

In my opinion - the best kept brunch secret in the city. We had a corner table, great service and terrific brunch buffet. Great $5 mimosas or huge make-your-own Bloody Marys bar. For under $40, it includes warm , melt-in-your-mouth freshly baked cinnamon rolls, freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juices, incredible selection of fresh oysters, sushi, crab bites, smoked salmon and salads. Also on the buffet are beef tenderloin and turkey carving stations, waffles, French toast, made-to-order omelets (all egg whites if desired) and a ton of ingredients from which to choose. If you have any room left, the dessert room (yes, an entire room) had a fabulous selection of home made cakes, pies, brownies and fun things for kids - M&M's, gummy worms, cupcakes and CrackerJack. There is too much of a selection to mention everything. It was an incredible value and absolutely delicious! It was our first, but definitely not our last, time there.

nothing special

From what I heard, I was expecting more. The food was OK, not great. And our dining area smelled like a dirty dish rag the entire time we were eating. Gross! Seating was very cramped too.

decent food, bad sommelier
By bigbudd from south loop, June 5, 2008

I took a goup of co-workers out to dinner and was thoroughly embarrassed with the wine service. I was a wine distributor and know wine- when I ordered an expensive cab and it was corked, the sommelier smelled it and told me I did not know what corked means and the bottle is fine! How is a guest treated like that? I requested only to deal with the server after that who told me not to worry about the somm- "he is never here anyway!" The food and other service was ok but that somm ruined the experience- we will never frequent that spot again.

Unforgivably bad service
By Davidin60640 from Edgewater, April 7, 2008

I have to wonder if the wait staff did not show up last Wednesday? It seemed like we were being taken care of by a hastily promoted bus boy. He was very kind and eager to take care of us, but he could not understand all of our order and knew little about the wine list. Everytime we asked about anything on the menu, his canned answer was "it's very good." The food was good, but not exceptional (at least, not in a city blessed with so many excellent restaurants).

Fresh seafood in Chicago
By CharlotteH from Downers Grove, March 19, 2008

This was our first time visiting Shaw's. The service was top notch from the moment we walked in. The place was packed, but the noise level didn't seem outrageous. Our martini's were stiff, and the maki sushi appetizer was a generous portion and very tasty. For our entree we had the king crab legs. They were delicious and a huge portion. Share sides, they are served family style and there is plenty. The cappucino was amazing, they serve Intelligista coffee. I only wish people wouldn't show up to a nice restaurant in jeans. We can't wait to come back and try the lobster next time!
