Cy's Crab House/Tribeca: User Reviews
Cy's Crab House/Tribeca
3819 N. Ashland Ave. - Chicago773-883-8900
We went here because it seemed to be under new ownership. An attempt at remodeling was apparent. The price range was listed at $9--$15. Most of the better items were well above that. The place is filthy! The food so-so. Drive around the back, look at their garbage area and you'll run. The curtains in the back dining area are so dirty they looked to be rotting. This place is a total ripoff, does not belong in ANY neighborhood in Chicago.

I had been there many times. The interior design is amazing. I like their big screen plasmas. Service was great and waiteresses were nice. it was not as bad as all these people say. The first time I was there I had the lobster. The menu is large and Cy is fair in prices. I love their crab legs and crab cake sandwich. They are the best in neighborhood. I am a huge rib fan. I had been there couple of times just for their ribs.

Stopped in after a cubs game, I didn't know they had so many tap beers! Service was good, and the bar specials we're great!! Plus they carry Delirium on tap which is hard to find.

To start, we've been here several times. We used to live in the North Center neighborhood, so this was a place we'd often frequent when we were in the mood for better than bar quality food. Steaks weren't bad (although it seemed like Cy's Steakhouse got the better quality, back when it was open), and everything else was okay--good enough to get us to come back anyway.
We moved to the Elmwood Park area last month, so Cy's really isn't a place we'd make a special trip for. However, I went to a Cubs game, so since I was in the area, I figured why not?
Food was decent, service was mediocre and that was were the good part ends. Already tired and in need of some sleep, I had finished my meal and was ready to go. After waiting for a while, we asked another waitress whom was coming to our area much more often to please get our waitress because we were ready to go. Finally, after 15 minutes, we got the bill. Okay, whatever, it happens, she was obviously busy waiting her 3 tables. Another 15 minutes pass before we're informed that the credit card printer is down and it'll be a few more minutes. Okay, whatever....15 more minutes pass and finally, irate, I go to the manager. "The machine is down," he says, "are you in a hurry?" Naw, I LOVE waiting 45+ minutes to pay for my bill!
So the conclusion is, after nearly an hour after we had finished eating, they finally took my credit card info down and let me sign off on it. What did I get in return? "Sorry about that, our machine goes down every 6 months or so." Yeah, that's nice, thanks for wasting my time on average food. We will NOT be back, even if we're back in the area.

I wanted to go to Cy's for a while. Driving by it always looked like a great spot but don't be fooled. We had a restaurant.com certificate as well. The menu is a mix of everything you can think of and the decor inside is about as cheesy as they come. We ordered the king crab legs (which were definitely not worth the $35 price tag) and salmon kabob (ok but not great). The best food we had was the hummus, which was awesome with the pita bread. The other great thing was the amount of tap beers they had; about 30 in total. That at least rounded out the experience. I think if they changed to an all mediterranean menu/restuarant it would be great (the owner is persian). Don't go expecting great seafood. For the $85 price tag (after $25 certificate and incl. gratuity) it is just not worth it.

Having driven by Cy's numerous times, my friends and I decided to try it for the first time this past Saturday night. I am a restaurant consultant and developer and try to be very fair and cautious in reviews. Keeping that in mind and that this was my FIRST visit, I observed this. Our service was incredibly friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is nicely themed. Ashland isn't an avenue you want open front or al fresco dining along, smelly exhaust. The restaurant was not busy, the kitchen was a little slow. Our food was slightly below average, too greasy, some shrimp came undercooked, it's not Fresh Catch seafood, but most in Chicago isn't. People on here rave about the Mediterranean fare, but is it appropriate here (crab house)? Confusing, go to Andie's or Rezas. On one visit, overall, 2.5 stars, not impressed enough to return for food, might for good beer at the bar.

Other than our sweet waitress who kept apologizing for the horrible food we were served, there is nothing good about this place. The drinks were acceptable, but the food was another story. We sent back the seafood gumbo (no seafood to be found) and the tough, overly breaded popcorn shrimp. The crab cake tasted more like tuna salad and was mushy and wet. The key lime pie was also a huge disappointment. The crust was soggy and there was a mountain of canned whipped cream atop the pie. Not what we expected at all. We will never go back.

The people writing the reviews for this place must be somehow related to the owners because Cy's does NOT deserve a 5 star rating! I have lived in the neighborhood for almost 3 years and was naturally curious about this crab shack-looking restaurant on Ashland. Much to my dismay, the stone crabs were still frozen and the lobster bisque was inedible (obviously from a can but certainly not a 'bisque'). While the taste of my entree was a short step up from the starters, the fish was served luke warm and the potatoes were cold! To top it all off, it was EXPENSIVE! This restaurant should omit the freebies (side salad and soup), decrease their prices and concentrate on the quality of their food. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.
