This little shack-sized restaurant on the west bank of the Calumet River is reputed to serve some of the best seafood in Chicago. 'We're known for our shrimp,' said Roberta Morales. 'I've had people come from Florida, California and France. One guy was just here from Montreal. He came with a buddy. He told him the best shrimp was right here.' The secret, Morales said, is that the restaurant smokes its own seafood. 'We're high on smoked fish,' she said. 'You're not going to get it fresher at Dominick's or Jewel. The quality and the preparation is not there.' Calumet Fisheries has been in business since 1928. The building used to be on 92nd Street, but many years ago it was carried three blocks downriver by a scow and now sits at the foot of the 95th Street bridge (Trivia buffs note: This is the bridge Dan Aykroyd jumped off at the beginning of 'The Blues Brothers.'). From there, Morales and her customers can watch ships from all nations pass up and down the river. Calumet Fisheries is a popular first stop for sailors just arriving on land, but 'most of them want cigarettes and alcohol,' Morales said.
