Brunch at Winston's Market

Southport’s most under-the-radar brunch spot?

Brunch at Winston's Market
Brunch time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Cost: About $12 per person

The scene: When looking for a tiny gourmet grocery serving brunch on the Southport Corridor (how’s that for a niche?) on a recent Saturday, Winston’s Market wasn’t our first choice. Like most brunchers, our first choice was Southport Grocery and Cafe, located just one block or so south and known for killer cupcakes (trust us, they are) and a bustling weekend morning scene. But 5-month-old Winston’s boasts one major advantage: available seats. Though it’s mainly a market—imagine a convenience store without the cigarettes and Lotto machine—Winston’s is also a great no-fuss weekend pick. OK, so the crowd still contains the mom-yakking-on-cellphone types you’ll find at Southport Grocery, but here there’s enough space to get away from them. Better yet, you can sit outside while the weather’s still nice. Order at the counter, grab a number, find a table and let the staff do the rest.

The cuisine: The brunch selection isn’t vast, but it covers the basics. We were delighted by an avalanche of fresh, sliced strawberries covering our cornflake-crusted French toast ($8.95). The breakfast burrito ($9.95), which comes stuffed with scrambled eggs, smoky chili-rubbed chicken, black beans, spinach and cheddar, won’t bowl you over, but it satisfies. Other options lean toward the lighter side of brunch: a quiche of the day ($8.95); and a yogurt, berry and granola parfait ($5.95). If you’re looking for lunch fare, the regular menu is available. Choices include a turkey Reuben ($6.95) and a build-your-own-salad option (starting at $6.95).

Better than a bloody mary? Though Winston’s sells beer and wine, it’s strictly to-go—you can’t drink it on the premises. We suggest Gale’s Root Beer ($1.69), made by Chicago’s sultan of sweets, Gale Gand, instead.

The wait: None. Just order at the counter and someone will bring your food to you in about 5 to 10 minutes.

Loved it: Though we were about 15 minutes late for brunch, we had called ahead and, after some pleading, the chef agreed to extend service for us—but just this once!

Hated it: Did we mention the moms on cellphones were pushing double-wide strollers?
