Vella Cafe

Neighborhood: Logan Square

Chicago, IL 60647

Restaurant vets Melissa Yen and Sara Voden are behind this casual order-at-the-counter-and-seat-yourself BYOB under the Western Avenue Blue Line "L" station. You might recognize the name—Vella started out selling made-to-order panini at Chicago Green City Market. In addition to panini, look for soups and salads, quiche and pastries. Weekend brunch features sweet and savory crepes, tasty amaranth pancakes with lingonberry preserves, and an egg- and salsa verde-topped polenta dish we just love. With cement floors and lots of windows, the cafe can get noisy, but it's a bright, cheery space and a convenient stop for weekday commuters.
